FUN WITH PUPPETS
Time: 2.00pm - 4.00pm / 4.15pm - 6.15pm
Venue: The Arts House

Trained by leading puppeteers from The Finger Players, the drama students from Anderson Theatre Circle will lead puppet making and story telling workshop for Primary school students. Participants will listen to a local story and create puppets based on characters in the story. Students will learn how to make glove and stick puppets and take them home as a memento of this memorable and fun workshop.

Since its inception in 2001, the Anderson Drama Club, re-named the Anderson Theatre Circle in 2004, has grown from strength to strength and played a major role in the school’s calendar. In the past years, the Circle has achieved Bronze (2001), Gold (2003 and 2007) Gold with Honours (2005) award at the SYF Central Judging. The Circle collaborates with students of Marryatville High School, Adelaide on a annual basis and performed to the South Australian Minister of Youth (2002), as well as to invited guests and students at the Play Den, Arts House (2007) amongst other projects. The Circle has also been invited to perform at various community and public events.

PENERAPAN UNSUR-UNSUR DRAMA DAN PEMENTASAN KE DALAM PENGAJARAN BAHASA MELAYU oleh Cik Oniatta Effendi
Time: 2.30pm - 5.30pm

This 3-hour workshop looks at drama conventions and strategies which can be used in the teaching of the Malay Language. The workshop will take participants through an actual lesson plan that incorporates these conventions, following which participants get a chance to work on planning a lesson that employs some of the drama conventions and strategies introduced during the workshop.
This workshop is appropriate for both Primary and Secondary school teachers. Participants are to come dressed in comfortable clothing as there will be physical activities during the workshop.

Oniatta Effendi graduated from Nanyang Technological University/ National Institute of Education with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours)/ Diploma in Education, majoring in Drama and Performance, and English Language. Oniatta taught English, Literature and Drama in Secondary Schools for 7 years. She spent a year and a half at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice as a Research Assistant. She now lecturers part-time at La Salle College of the Arts, alongside writing and facilitating drama curriculum in secondary schools.


DRAMA AS PEDAGOGY FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOM by
Dr Prudence Wales

This 3-hour session introduces participants to a range of drama strategies that can be applied in the English language classroom. The strategies will focus on ways to help develop students’ understanding in the three areas of language use in the English Language syllabus: language for information, literary response and expression, and social interaction. The workshop is suitable for both primary and secondary school teachers. Come in comfortable clothing for effective participation in activities.

Dr. Prudence Wales is a lecturer in the Visual and Performing Arts Group at The National Institute of Education. She was a high school teacher for many years in Australia, during which time she coordinated English, Performing Arts, and Student Welfare. Her PhD examined the narrative discourses and subjectivities of drama teachers.

INTEGRATING DRAMA AS PEDAGOGY INTO CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHING by Dr Chou Shiao-yuh
Time: 9.00am - 12 noon

This workshop introduces participants to a range of drama techniques as well as demonstrates the effective application of these techniques in teaching Chinese Language. After participants experiencing for themselves the sense of engagement that drama pedagogy offers learners, a dialogue session is offered to develop their understanding and criticality of applying drama as pedagogy in classroom practice. Come in comfortable clothing for effective participation in activities.

Dr Shiao-Yuh Chou was trained in England (MA in Theatre in Education from Goldsmith College, University of London and PhD in Drama in Education from University of Warwick). Currently she is a lecturer in the Visual and Performing Arts Academic Group, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. Her major research interest is in the areas of teacher training and drama as pedagogy.


VOCAL SAVVY by Ms Verena Tay

If yes to any of the above, then Vocal Savvy is for you. In three hours, this workshop will help develop your vocal potential and presentation skills as well as enhance your expressive abilities.

An Associate Artist with The Substation since 2002, Verena Tay has spent more than two decades acting, directing and writing for local English-language theatre. After gaining an MA in Voice Studies (2005) from the Central School of Speech and Drama ( London ), she now earns her living teaching voice, speech and/or presentation skills at NIE, NAFA, NTU and other local institutions.


MAGIC, MYTH AND MADNESS IN SHAKESPEARE’S A MIDSUMMER’S NIGHT DREAM by Dr Jane Gilmer & Mr Michael Burton
Time: 12.15pm - 3.15pm

In this practical workshop participants will explore Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as art and pedagogy in the classroom. Expect a creative and certainly magical time exploring, playing and expressing with the powerful language of Shakespeare. Come in comfortable clothing for effective participation in activities.

Dr Jane Gilmer currently teaches drama at NIE. She is a trained actor and has been a professional Shakespearean actor for 20 years. Her specialist research is on Shakespeare as transformational theatre.
Michael Burton is a trained actor and is currently working on a Masters Degree in and speech and drama and Steiner Education in NZ. He is a published playwright.


PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS by Mr Haresh Sharma
Time: 2.30pm - 5.30pm

Venue: The Arts House
Cost: $32.00 per partcipant / SDEA members 15% discount

This practical and effective 3-hour workshop led by acclaimed playwright Mr Haresh Sharma is an introduction to the basics of playwriting. It includes:
1. how to start writing a play;
2. development of character and narrative and
3. elements of playwriting - dialogue, conflict, language and structure.
The workshop will also include practical writing exercises, improvisations and a question and answer session. Ideal for teachers who wish to work with scriptwriting in classroom learning.

Haresh Sharma is Resident Playwright of The Necessary Stage and co-Artistic Director of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival. He has written over 50 plays, staged all over the world including Edinburgh, London, Cairo, Melbourne and Tokyo. He has an MA in Playwriting from the
University of Birmingham. His play, Off Centre, is a Literature text for 'N' and 'O' levels.

STORYTELLING AND PUPPETRY FOR FAMILIES, by Ms Abra Chusid and Anderson Theatre Circle
Time: 2.30pm - 5.30pm

Venue: The Arts House
Cost: $60.00 per family of 4 persons (Combination of adults and children)

This 3-hour fun and interactive workshop will feature Arnold Lobel’s Fables as inspiration. You and your child will learn to be storytellers, spinning tales with your words, body and puppets, exploring many paths to creativity. Families will also improvise as a team to come up with their own zany and fantastical stories. All participants get to take home a puppet!

Ms Abra Chusid is in Singapore on a US government sponsored Fulbright Fellowship.  Originally from Chicago, Abra graduated from Northwestern University in 2007, and is spending the year working with SDEA.  Through SDEA, Abra has taught at local secondary and primary schools, served as Project Manager for Celebrate Drama!, and directed fifteen and searching, premiering in this festival.

Introduction to Commedia dell’ Arte

Commedia dell’ Arte  is the Italian comedy popular in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is filled with instantly recognizable characters in plots filled with the pursuit of love, disguises and comic business. Today this theatre form  is explored by actors in training because it teaches rigour, rhythm  and timing essential not only to Commedia but applicable to all performing styles. Participants will learn a bit about the history of Commedia dell ‘Arte, the archetypal characters and have a chance to act out a simple scenario.

Christina Sergeant is a founding member of SDEA. Her fascination with Commedia dell ‘Arte began when in her first professional acting job she was told to ‘go interact with the audience’ and someone mentioned they did this in Commedia dell ‘Arte! She also has an extensive background in mime and performs regularly with the Madhatters Comedy Company, Singapore’s first and only professional comedy improv group.

How does one start to understand a text?
well it's a bit like a medical autopsy you pull it all out and them put it all back! Or a good archeological dig. You excavate! Facillitator Michael Corbidge has to do just that when he is planning to direct a play both before he meets the actors and when they arrive for the first rehearsal. Michael will show you tried and tested ways to dive in to text and come up with some real gems!

Michael Corbidge is the Associate Artisic Director of the Singapore Repertory Theatre Company. He is an accomplished director and actor for many acclaimed plays and is also a part-time lecturer at NIE.
