IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dear Members,

Invitation to participate in Connections IV – Forum on Arts Pedagogy

The Singapore Drama Educators Association, together with the National Arts Council and the East Zone Centre of Excellence for the Creative Arts, is co-organizing Connections IV, a forum on arts pedagogy. Our target audience includes Heads of Department, School Arts Coordinators, Teachers and Professional Artists involved in arts education.

Through dialogue sessions between professional artists and teachers in the forum and practical workshops, Connections IV examines the term ‘pedagogy’ as well as ‘artistry’ and their place in arts education.  It aims to excite and inspire teachers and artists involved in arts education to develop, deepen and expand their knowledge as well as understand international and local practices in arts education.

The objectives of the forum are as follows:

  • To keep arts educators abreast of the latest development in arts education
  • To enhance the capacity, knowledge and skills of arts educators
  • To provide a platform for teachers and professional artists to network as well as exchange and share ideas on a framework for collaboration in arts education
  • To learn about good practices and pedagogical guidelines for delivering arts education in Singapore schools

The actual cost of this forum on arts pedagogy is $80 for each participant.  The National Arts Council will sponsor each participant 40% of the original cost or $32.  SDEA members only need to pay $32 for the entire 8-hour forum.  This includes participation in the forum, workshops, 2 teabreaks and 1 lunch. SDEA members will not receive Dramatise as you would have got that through membership channels. This further reduces the forum cost for SDEA members to $32

Dear Members,

Greetings from SDEA.

By now you would have received your copy of Dramatise Vol 4, the annual publication on drama and theatre education in Singapore. If not, do contact SDEA immediately at the email address provided below.

SDEA is committed to feature best practices and tried and tested lesson plans not only on drama but also other art forms as well as interdisciplinary practices. We encourage you, our members, to contribute to future volumes of Dramatise.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your membership. Your membership is a sign of your commitment and support for solidarity and unity in the arts education community. This is vital as only when we come together that we are able to make an impact to improve benefits for the profession.

As you know, since 2007, SDEA is part of the Workforce Development Authority (WDA) consultative panel on mapping workforce skill development in the Creative Industries. Last year, SDEA successfully championed arts education as one of the professions in the Creative Industries. With that inclusion, the panel began developing competency and professional development needs of this community. The detailed competency chart for arts educator will be released by year-end.

In the mean time, several key areas of professional development have been identified:

  1. Foundation level performance and theatre skills for new arts educators and the development of ethics and policy practices in both formal and informal educational contexts
  2. Pedagogical and Classroom management skills
  3. Development of special disciplines such as Physical Theatre, Devising Theatre, Interdisciplinary Learning as well as Theatre for Community Practices with both Singaporean and international practitioners
  4. Facilitation techniques
  5. Organisation, intellectual property issues, ethics of arts education practices

SDEA is also pushing for benefits for freelance arts educators. Currently only full-time or contracted employees may benefit from the Skill Development Fund (SDF). SDEA is working with WDA, NAC and MICA with feedback on other ways in which freelancers may benefit from government subsidies. This means offering financial support for continuous learning and professional development in the future.

SDEA's first professional development programme accredited by WDA is "Physical Theatre: From Artistry to Pedagogy". This is a 24-hour practical course with an evaluation. Attached is the registration form for your perusal and action. SDEA members enjoy a substantial subsidy on this course.

Also look out for details on our annual social. Peggy Ferroa, an active member of SDEA, is working out an exciting event with a Peranakan flavour. Spend a Saturday afternoon watching a delightful Peranakan performance and be acquainted with the finer points in Peranakan culture and life. Bring your family and friends along. It will be a blast!

For those keen to participate and/or interested to know more about WDA, the competency development as well as SDF, please contact SDEA at <sdeaconnect@gmail.com> or call 96619071.

Regards,

Noorlinah Mohamed
