SDEA Masterclass: Designing Assessment Literacy in Drama Education with Dr Peter Duffy

As drama practitioners, how then do we utilise assessments as a means to sit beside students in their learning? How do we help our students shape their understanding of the practice and craft of theatre and the content of instruction? Through the process of planning formative and summative assessments, participants in the masterclass will learn how focusing on specific, authentic tasks within instruction and reflection strengthen teaching.

SDEA's Masterclass: Self-With-Others Actor Training

On 13 February 2016, John Britton led a masterclass on ‘Self-With-Others’ - an improvisation-based physical approach to training as a performer. The masterclass was a positive experience for participants who were a mix of drama educators and theatre practitioners. The approach encouraged a creative daring and helped them understand how to empower and embolden the people they work with.

Masterclass Series: Communicating With Puppets

Artistic director of Paper Monkey Theatre Ltd and puppet master Benjamin Ho facilitated the ‘Communicating with Puppets’ masterclass on 16 January 2016. Benjamin introduced different kinds of puppets like rod puppets and hand puppets as well as shed light on which best matched different student profiles.

Masterclass Series: Directing for the Drama Facilitator and Teacher

The Finger Players' Company Director Chong Tze Chien facilitated the ‘Directing for the Drama Facilitator and Teacher’ masterclass on 23 January 2016. It was a popular masterclass which unpacked the complexities of theatre direction and covered skills such as script interpretation via stage blocking, effective communication with actors, incorporating design and staging devises in storytelling.

SDEA Masterclass: Commedia dell’Arte for Teaching Artists

SDEA is pleased to have master of Commedia dell’Arte Marco Luly back to facilitate a special masterclass for teaching artists. The masterclass unpacks the main features of the theatre form such as movement, mime and vocal modulation. It also provides you the opportunity to experience actor-training with a focus on body expression, body mastery and improvisation to cultivate self-awareness as well as precision in the use of gestures and voice.

Masterclass Series: Creating an Atmosphere of Possibility

Experiential therapist Sharmini Winslow facilitated the energizing psychodrama masterclass ‘Creating an Atmosphere of Possibility’ on the 31 October 2016 at the Winslow Clinic. 20 participants were treated to an enriching psychodrama experience that changed their perspectives about challenging moments in their teaching journey. For most, it was their first encounter with psychodrama and it proved to be an eye-opening experience.

Masterclass Series: Devising

On 14 November 2015, Singapore Polytechnic lecturer and theatre practitioner Oniatta Effendi facilitated a masterclass on devising attended by 15 drama educators. She provided a unique lens about the role of the facilitator and sparked a discussion on the importance of developing a spirit of civic-consciousness in youths through devise work.

Masterclass: Arts as a Tool in Community Engagement with Janet Pillai

How do artists select appropriate mediums and develop appropriate programming for the communities they work with? This materclass is designed specially for artists, artist educators and pedagogues of all art forms who would like to look at innovative methods to inspire and challenge community groups.

Masterclass: Sourcing Within with Ang Gey Pin

Learn to build your creative materials as well as bridge creative impulses and intuitions to the audience. Performance will then become a means of connecting thoughts, intentions, associations, imageries and human relations. This masterclass lead you to self-discover and find refreshing new ways in physical and vocal embodiment and organic approach to performing.

Masterclass: Drama as a Cross-Curricular Pedagogy by Pamela Bowell

Human beings learn naturally through drama. Our brains are ‘wired’ for it. This workshop facilitated by Pamela who is Chair of National Drama, the UK’s leading subject association for drama teachers and theatre educators, explores how teachers can move on from using one or two individual drama strategies and start to build effective dramas by combining strategies together.
