Description:
Participants will understand how the elements of drama can be applied in performance (eg. devised work and text) and its application as a framework for learning (eg. language learning and/or social development).
Participants will also come away with a general understanding of the types of learning that can occur through drama, planning and developing drama lessons for specific groups (eg. Primary or Secondary classes, Drama Club), basic principles of curriculum planning and assessment (formative and summative) and the use of resources for lesson planning.
This course includes practical and experiential/studio work, lectures/tutorials, discussions and group presentation. It also has a mentorship component to be completed within 2 months of the course.
Assessment:
This is a Workforce Development Agency accredited training and assessment course and assessment is an important component that evaluates the competency of the participant in applying the elements experienced in the course in a classroom situation. Participants MUST complete the course with the assessment. To support the participants’ practice, there will also be a mentoring programme where an experienced drama facilitator observes a participant facilitating a drama class.

Information on Course Leader:
Dr Prudence Wales teaches and works in the Visual and Performing Arts Group at the National Institute of Education. She taught in high schools for many years in Australia, during which time she coordinated English, Performing Arts and Student Welfare. She has been actively involved as an advocate for drama education and in development and production of support materials for drama teachers. She is a past President of Drama Victoria and past Director of Publications for Drama Australia, both of which are professional bodies supporting and advocating drama education, nationally and abroad. Prue also has worked for the Victorian Assessment Curriculum Authority as an examiner of Theatre Studies and Drama for year 12 students. Her PhD examined the narrative discourses and subjectivities of drama teachers.
Candidates will also be working with experienced theatre and drama educators during tutorials or assessments.
